EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max Review
Share
Power Nomad here, coming at you from the road less powered.
I've been chasing the sun and dodging blackouts across Australia and New Zealand for years now—whether it's boondocking in the Coromandel, vanlife up the East Coast, or just keeping the essentials alive when the grid throws a tantrum. So when the EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max (AU/NZ version) landed in my setup, I was keen to put it through its paces. This isn't some toy power bank; it's a proper little workhorse built for real-world nomads.
First Impressions & Build
Straight out of the box, this thing feels premium but not precious. The RIVER 3 Max packs a solid 572Wh capacity (that's the RIVER 3 Plus base with the extra battery stacked on) at around 8.4kg. It's still compact enough to toss in the back of the ute or van without hating life—roughly 234 x 232 x 238 mm. The build quality is typical EcoFlow: tough, clean lines, and that matte finish that doesn't show every fingerprint. It's got decent dust and splash resistance too, which is a must when you're setting up camp in unpredictable NZ weather.
The <10ms UPS switchover is legit game-changing. I tested it running my router, laptop, and a small monitor during a simulated outage—zero hiccups. Perfect for those of us who work from the road or need to keep critical gear alive.
Power Performance
600W continuous output (with 1200W X-Boost for those surge-happy appliances like kettles or small heaters).
In AU/NZ spec, it's properly tuned for 230V/50Hz, so no weird compatibility issues.
I ran a 40L camping fridge for hours, charged drones, laptops, and phones simultaneously, and even knocked out a quick brew with a travel kettle. It handled everything I threw at it without breaking a sweat. Runtime estimates are realistic too—a 3W router can apparently go for days on this thing.
Recharging is impressively fast: full charge in about an hour from the wall (great when you're at a powered site), and solar input is solid for topping up on the move. Pair it with a decent 100-200W portable panel and you're living the dream. LiFePO4 chemistry means you're looking at 3000+ cycles to 80%—that's years of abuse in the field.
Ports are well thought out for a unit this size: multiple AC outlets, USB-A, fast USB-C PD, and the 12V car socket. App control via Bluetooth/WiFi is smooth and gives you all the monitoring you'd want.
The Nomad Verdict
Pros:
Excellent power-to-weight ratio for 572Wh.
Super fast charging and seamless UPS.
Quiet operation (<30dB).
Expandable and future-proof.
Built tough for the Kiwi lifestyle.
Cons:
At this capacity it's not running a full coffee machine + microwave setup for long, but that's not what it's designed for.
Price is premium (as expected for the quality and features).
If you're a weekend warrior, vanlifer, overlander, or just want reliable backup power without hauling a Delta-sized beast, the EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max is a winner. It's the sweet spot between the tiny River 3 and the bigger boys—portable enough to actually take everywhere, powerful enough to matter.
Rating: 9/10 – Solid thumbs up from this power nomad. Highly recommended for anyone living life off the beaten socket.
