A powered campsite is easy. The real test comes when you are parked beside a lake for three nights, working from the back of the ute, or riding out an outage with the fridge still running. Is portable solar worth it in NZ? For plenty of people, yes - but only when it is paired with a realistic power plan, not wishful thinking about sunshine and watts.
Portable solar is not designed to replace the grid for every household. It is built to give you more control: keep essentials charged, stretch the runtime of a portable power station, and stay mobile when the nearest socket is nowhere near your plans. That can be a game changer on the road and a very useful layer of resilience at home.
When portable solar earns its place
The strongest case for portable solar is simple: you use power away from mains electricity, often enough that charging from a wall socket alone feels limiting. A folding panel and power station turn a parked vehicle, bach deck or sunny patch of grass into a recharge point.
For campers and overlanders, that means keeping phones, head torches, camera batteries, a compressor fridge and a portable speaker alive without flattening the vehicle battery. For vanlife, solar can cover a meaningful share of everyday low-to-medium loads, particularly during longer stays away from holiday parks. The freedom is not abstract. It is one less reason to pack up early just to find a plug.
Remote workers have a different reason to care. A laptop, mobile hotspot, monitor and lights do not consume massive power individually, but a full workday adds up. A portable solar setup can replenish a power station while you work from a campsite, rural property or job site. It also gives you a backup option when an outage interrupts a deadline.
At home, solar is most useful as part of an outage plan. A charged power station can run communications, lights, medical equipment with appropriate guidance, internet gear, and selected kitchen or refrigeration loads. Put portable panels out once conditions allow and you can extend that reserve beyond the battery capacity you started with.
Is portable solar worth it in NZ weather?
New Zealand has excellent solar potential, but it does not offer perfect solar conditions on command. A bright summer afternoon can be brilliant for charging. Winter sun, coastal cloud, tree cover, rain and a panel laid flat on the ground can cut output sharply.
That does not make portable solar a bad investment. It means the advertised panel rating is a maximum, not a daily promise. A 200W panel may deliver close to that figure in clear, strong sun with ideal angle and no shade. In ordinary use, expect changing output as clouds move through, the sun shifts and the panel heats up.
Portable panels have an advantage over fixed roof panels: you can move them. Park the vehicle in shade, then place the panel in full sun. Tilt it towards the light. Shift it a few times through the day if you are set up for a while. Those small adjustments can make a noticeable difference.
The trade-off is effort. If you want power with zero setup, a roof-mounted system or a mains-charged battery may suit you better. If you value flexibility - and do not mind unfolding a panel for the day - portable solar is a strong fit.
Start with what you need to run
Buying the largest panel first is a common mistake. Start with the gear you actually need to power and how long you need to use it.
A power station’s capacity is measured in watt-hours, or Wh. Think of this as the size of the energy tank. A 1,000Wh unit holds roughly twice the usable energy of a 500Wh unit, allowing for normal conversion losses. Appliance power is measured in watts, which tells you how quickly that tank drains.
A 60W laptop charger used for five hours may use around 300Wh, although real consumption varies. A 40W compressor fridge cycling on and off could use several hundred watt-hours across a day, depending on ambient temperature, settings and how often it is opened. A 1,500W kettle or heater is a different beast altogether. It can drain a modest battery surprisingly fast.
Before choosing a system, write down your non-negotiables. Perhaps it is a fridge, two phones, laptop, lights and a mobile hotspot. Perhaps it is a CPAP machine and the ability to recharge it every day. This creates a useful target instead of a pile of specifications.
Also check the power station’s AC output, not just its battery capacity. A battery may store enough energy for an appliance but still be unable to start it if the inverter output is too low. High-draw gear such as kettles, induction cooktops, electric heaters and some power tools needs careful matching.
The setup that makes practical sense
For weekend trips, a compact power station with a smaller folding panel may be enough for personal devices, lighting and light-duty camping gear. It is easy to carry, easy to store and can be charged from mains before you leave.
For regular touring with a compressor fridge, drones, cameras or work equipment, more battery capacity and a 200W-class portable panel often make better sense. You are building enough reserve to handle an overcast day rather than relying on perfect weather every afternoon.
For extended van travel or home backup, think in layers. Charge the power station from mains while the grid is available. Use an alternator charger to add energy while driving. Deploy solar when stationary. Each method covers a different part of the journey, and together they are far more dependable than relying on one source.

Where portable solar falls short
Portable solar is not a magic answer for high-consumption living. Those loads demand a much bigger system and a different level of planning.
It is also not ideal if your only usable outdoor space is shaded most of the day. Solar panels need direct light. Shade from trees, buildings, roof racks or even a poorly placed camp chair can have an outsized impact on charging performance.
Security and weather matter too. Folding panels are valuable gear, so do not leave them unattended at a busy campsite. Use quality cables, keep connectors dry, secure panels against wind and pack them away properly. Portable does not mean indestructible.
Finally, portable solar does not remove the need to manage consumption. If the forecast is grim, skip the electric cooking and use gas where appropriate. Charge laptops and tool batteries during the brightest part of the day. Treat battery percentage like water in a tank: spend it deliberately.
How to get more from every sunny hour
Panel placement does more for performance than most buyers expect. Keep the panel out of shade, point it towards the strongest light and wipe off dust, salt spray or mud. In the southern hemisphere, panels generally perform best when facing north, though chasing direct sunlight matters more than chasing a perfect compass angle while travelling.
Use the power station’s display or app, where available, to see live solar input. This tells you whether a reposition is worth it. It also helps you learn how your specific gear behaves under different weather conditions, which is far more useful than relying on a brochure figure.
Charge energy-hungry items while solar input is strong, then preserve stored battery power for night. That approach turns a portable setup from a short-lived convenience into a system that can support several days of sensible use.
So, should you buy portable solar?
Portable solar is worth it when freedom from the socket has real value to you. If you camp often, travel in a van, work remotely, spend time at an off-grid bach or want a stronger plan for blackouts, it can pay for itself in convenience, confidence and capability long before you calculate a strict dollar figure.
If you only need to charge a phone once or twice on a weekend away, a good power bank may be all you need. But when your plans include fridges, laptops, communications and longer stays beyond the grid, portable solar gives your battery a way to keep fighting. Choose for your real loads, allow for cloudy days, and you will have energy that moves when you do.
