How to Power CPAP Overnight Without Mains

A flat battery at 2 am is more than an inconvenience when you rely on CPAP therapy. Whether you are camping beyond the powered sites, sleeping in a van, or preparing for a blackout, knowing how to power CPAP overnight gives you one less thing to worry about.
The reliable answer is usually a correctly sized portable power station, charged before bed and matched to the way your machine actually runs. The detail that catches people out is not the CPAP itself. It is the heated humidifier and heated tube, which can turn a modest overnight load into a much larger one.
Start with your CPAP's real power use
CPAP machines have a power rating, but that rating is not always the same as their overnight consumption. Your machine constantly adjusts through the night, and the power draw changes with pressure settings, mask leaks, room temperature and which comfort features are active.
A basic CPAP running without heat may use roughly 5 to 15 watts on average. Over eight hours, that is around 40 to 120 watt-hours (Wh). Add a humidifier and heated tube, and the average can climb to 30 to 80 watts or more. An eight-hour night may then require 240 to 640Wh.
Those ranges are a planning starting point, not a prescription. Check your CPAP manual, its power brick label, or manufacturer guidance for your specific model. If you have used the machine on battery before, use that real-world result over any generic estimate.
The simple battery-sizing calculation
Multiply your estimated average watts by the number of hours you need to sleep. Then add a sensible buffer for inverter losses, a cold night, an extra hour in bed or a battery that has not been charged perfectly.
For example, a machine averaging 20W for eight hours needs 160Wh. Allowing 25 per cent headroom brings the target to about 200Wh. A CPAP averaging 50W with heat features enabled needs 400Wh over eight hours, so a 500Wh to 700Wh power station is the more realistic choice.
Do not plan around a battery's headline number alone. A 500Wh unit does not necessarily deliver every watt-hour through an AC outlet, because converting battery power to mains power uses some energy. It also pays to avoid draining a power station to zero when your sleep therapy is on the line.
Choose the best way to run the machine
There are two practical ways to power CPAP overnight: through the machine's regular AC wall plug, or through a compatible DC adapter.
AC power: simple and widely compatible
Most portable power stations have a standard AC outlet. Plug in your normal CPAP power supply, switch on AC output, and run the machine as you would at home. This is the easiest setup, particularly if you use a machine with a proprietary connector or are unsure whether a third-party DC lead is compatible.
The trade-off is conversion loss. The power station turns its battery's DC power into AC, then your CPAP power brick usually converts it back to DC. For a single night, that may be a small price to pay for simplicity. For several nights off-grid, it can noticeably reduce runtime.
DC power: the efficient option for longer trips
Many major CPAP brands offer a model-specific DC converter or battery cable. Used with the right portable power station, this can avoid the AC conversion step and stretch every stored watt-hour further.
Compatibility matters here. Voltage, plug type and current rating must match the machine. Do not assume a cable that physically fits is safe to use. Use an approved adapter for your CPAP model and follow its instructions, especially if your unit needs a 12V, 24V or 24V-style converter.
For multi-night camping, overlanding or van travel, a DC setup paired with a power station can be the smarter, more efficient system.
Turn off the features that drain a battery first
You do not have to sacrifice effective therapy to use less power, but you may need to decide which comfort features are essential for one night away from mains power.
The humidifier and heated tube are generally the largest loads. If the forecast is mild and you can sleep comfortably without them, switching one or both off can dramatically extend battery runtime. Many people use passive humidification or adjust humidity settings down when travelling, but your comfort and therapy needs come first.
A cold cabin or tent changes the calculation. Without a heated tube, condensation can build up in the hose, often called rainout. Insulating the hose, keeping the machine slightly lower than the mattress, and avoiding a very cold airflow path can help. Test these changes at home before relying on them in the bush or during an outage.
Also switch off unnecessary power station outputs. Leaving AC or DC ports running all day creates standby draw that can quietly waste capacity before bedtime.
Build a setup that can handle the unexpected
A CPAP battery plan should cover more than the perfect eight-hour night. A late bedtime, an early night, a power station left in a hot vehicle, or a sudden cold snap can all change the result.
For occasional overnight use without heated features, a compact 250Wh to 300Wh power station may be enough for many machines. For a machine with humidification, a heated tube, or higher pressure requirements, 500Wh and above provides a far more comfortable margin. If you want two or more nights between charges, work from your measured nightly consumption and scale up from there.
Portable power is not just for campsites. At home, a charged power station can keep your CPAP running through an overnight blackout without firing up a noisy generator. Keep it somewhere dry and accessible, with its charge level checked regularly. If outages are common where you live, choose enough capacity for the likely length of an interruption, not merely one optimistic night.
Recharge for the way you travel
Your recharge plan determines whether a portable power station is a one-night backup or genuine off-grid capability.
For road trips, recharge from the vehicle while driving using a suitable car charger or alternator charging setup. This works well when you are covering distance each day, but a standard 12V socket can be slow. Higher-output vehicle charging systems are a better fit for travellers who need to refill larger power stations between camps.
For stationary camps, solar can keep your CPAP system independent of powered sites. Solar performance depends on panel size, weather, shade and the short winter sun, so treat it as a recharge source rather than a guarantee. Charge the battery fully before departure, then use solar to replace the power consumed each day.
At home, recharge promptly after any blackout or practice run. Lithium power stations are ready when maintained, not when discovered half-empty on the night you need them.
Run a full test before you leave
The best time to learn your CPAP needs more power is not at bedtime in a remote campground. Set up your machine at home exactly as you plan to use it: same pressure settings, humidity level, heated tube setting and connection method.
Run it for a full night from the power station. Check the remaining battery percentage in the morning, then repeat with heat features reduced if you want to compare runtime. This gives you a far more useful number than a product label ever will.
Pack the CPAP, power brick or DC adapter, hose, mask, spare filters and any extension lead you genuinely need in one dedicated bag. Keep the power station level, dry and ventilated, not buried under bedding or left in direct sun. Avoid using damaged leads, wet connections or improvised wiring.
Safety points worth taking seriously
A portable power station is generally a cleaner, quieter option than a generator for overnight CPAP use. Never run a petrol generator in a tent, vehicle, garage or near open windows. Carbon monoxide is a serious risk, and generators should be positioned well away from sleeping areas according to their manufacturer instructions.
Do not connect a CPAP straight to a loose vehicle battery unless you have a properly designed, compatible setup. Vehicle starter batteries are not intended for repeated deep discharge, and incorrect connections can damage equipment or leave you stranded.
If your CPAP is part of treatment for a significant medical condition, discuss travel and backup power planning with your clinician. A battery is a practical backup, but it does not replace personalised medical advice or an emergency plan.
Reliable sleep should travel with you. Size your power station for your real settings, test it before the trip, and keep enough reserve for the night that does not go exactly to plan.
