You do not really care about battery chemistry when the lights go out, the camp fridge is still running, or your laptop is hanging on at 12 per cent in the middle of a workday. You care about one thing - how long does portable battery last, and whether it will keep your gear alive long enough to get through the job, the trip, or the outage.
The honest answer is that there are two different clocks running on every portable battery. The first is runtime - how many hours it can power your devices before it needs a recharge. The second is lifespan - how many years, or charge cycles, the battery itself will last before its performance starts to drop. If you are buying portable power for freedom, backup, or off-grid flexibility, you need to understand both.
How long does portable battery last in real use?
Runtime depends on three things working together: the battery capacity, the power draw of your devices, and how efficiently the unit delivers that power. This is why one person says their power station lasted all weekend, while another says theirs barely made it through the night.
Battery capacity is usually measured in watt-hours, or Wh. Think of that as the fuel tank. A 500Wh portable battery holds roughly half the energy of a 1000Wh unit. Your appliances and devices then draw power from that tank at different rates. A phone sips power. A laptop uses more. A fridge, electric blanket, coffee machine or induction cooktop can chew through stored energy fast.
As a rough guide, a 500Wh unit might charge a phone dozens of times, run a laptop for several work sessions, or keep a small camping fridge going for part of a day, depending on cycling and ambient temperature. A 1000Wh or 1500Wh power station gives you much more breathing room for overnight use, remote work setups, or basic emergency backup at home.
But the label never tells the whole story. If your battery is running AC appliances through the inverter, some energy is lost in conversion. If you are powering DC gear directly, efficiency is often better. Cold weather, battery age, and even leaving the display and ports active can also trim your runtime.
The quick way to estimate battery runtime
If you want a practical estimate, divide the battery's usable watt-hours by the wattage of the device you want to run. Then allow for some energy loss.
For example, if you have a 1000Wh portable battery and your appliance draws 100W, the simple maths says about 10 hours. In real life, after inverter losses and operating conditions, you might get closer to 8 to 9 hours.
That same 1000Wh unit could run a 50W portable fridge for much longer, because fridges cycle on and off rather than pulling full power constantly. On the other hand, a 1000W appliance such as a kettle or toaster may only run for a short burst before flattening the battery quickly.
This is where a lot of buyers get caught. They focus on whether a battery can run a device, not how long it can run it. Those are very different questions.
Typical runtimes by use case
For camping and overlanding, a portable battery can last a day or several days if you are mainly charging phones, lights, cameras and a fridge that cycles efficiently. For remote work, a mid-sized unit may comfortably power a laptop, mobile, monitor and modem through a full working day. For home backup, runtime depends heavily on what you decide is essential. Keeping the internet, phones, lights and a CPAP machine running is one thing. Trying to power a heater or full-size kitchen appliance is another.

How long does a portable battery last before wearing out?
Now to the second clock. Portable batteries do not last forever, but good ones can last years.
Most modern portable power stations are rated in charge cycles. One cycle means using the equivalent of 100 per cent of the battery's capacity, though not necessarily all at once. If you use 50 per cent today and 50 per cent tomorrow, that usually counts as one full cycle.
Older or more basic lithium-ion batteries often last around 500 to 800 cycles before dropping to about 80 per cent of original capacity. Many newer lithium iron phosphate batteries, often called LiFePO4, can last 2000 to 3500 cycles or more under normal use. That difference matters if you plan to use your unit regularly for vanlife, work, or daily solar charging.
In practical terms, a battery rated for 3000 cycles could still be going strong after many years of steady use. If you only use it for occasional camping trips or storm backup, it may last much longer on the calendar than on the cycle count.
Battery lifespan is not just about cycles
Age, heat, storage habits and charging behaviour all play a part. A battery kept in a hot shed, regularly drained flat, or left at 100 per cent charge for months on end may degrade faster than one stored and used more carefully.
That does not mean you need to treat your power station like fine china. These products are built for real life. But a few sensible habits make a difference. Keep it out of extreme heat, use the correct charger, and if you are storing it long-term, do not leave it completely empty.
What shortens portable battery runtime?
If your battery seems to be running out too fast, there is usually a reason beyond bad luck.
High-draw appliances are the obvious culprit. Anything that creates heat - kettles, cooktops, heaters, hairdryers - burns through stored energy quickly. Inverter losses matter too. Running AC gear is convenient, but less efficient than running compatible DC devices where possible.
Temperature can also shift performance. Cold conditions can reduce available capacity in the moment, while prolonged heat is tougher on long-term battery health. Then there is standby drain. If the unit is left on with ports active, screens lit, or wireless functions enabled, it may slowly use power even when nothing major is plugged in.
The final factor is battery age. Over time, every rechargeable battery loses some capacity. That is normal. The aim is not to stop degradation altogether. It is to buy the right chemistry and size for your use, then get strong service from it for years.
How to make a portable battery last longer
The smartest way to extend runtime is not fancy at all. Use less power.
Choose efficient devices. Run LED lighting instead of halogen. Charge laptops and phones through USB-C or DC where possible. Avoid using high-wattage appliances unless you genuinely need them. If you are off-grid for more than a day, pair your battery with solar so you are topping up during daylight rather than only counting down.
For long-term battery health, avoid extreme temperatures and repeated deep discharges where you can. Many modern units manage charging and protection automatically, which helps, but user habits still matter. If your portable battery is part of your emergency setup, check it regularly so it is not sitting neglected when you need it most.
